Fruit Tree Pruning, Grafting, and Tool Sharpening at Colorado Mountain College in Carbondale, CO

Part I: Saturday, March 7th 12pm-4pm

Part III: Saturday, April 2nd, 12pm-4pm

Part I: Slideshow and lecture will introduce the science behind fruit tree grafting, common fruit tree rootstocks, and types of grafting methods. Hands-on demonstrations in the classroom will cover how to sharpen various types of garden tools using various types of sharpening equipment.

Part II: Slideshow and lecture on the rationale for pruning fruit trees and berry bushes, pruning principles and rules of thumb, and how to collect fruit tree scionwood for propagation by grafting. Class includes hands-on demonstration and practice of fruit tree pruning, shrub pruning, and scionwood collection outside at the Carbondale Campus.

Part III: Hands-on demonstration and practice using scionwood collected in the class on 4/4, and stored under refrigeration. Learn grafting methods and then have the opportunity to graft your own trees with personal instruction. Includes a demonstration of grafting in the field on trees in the Carbondale Campus landscape.

Students must be 18 years or older. It is highly recommended that students take all three of the classes in this series for best outcomes.
